Finding a truly great local bakery in a new city is harder than it should be. You scroll through generic star ratings that lump every item together, or you end up at a chain franchise when you really wanted that artisanal sourdough spot down the street. I built Bread Map to solve that problem.
Bread Map is a crowdsourced map of neighborhood bakeries where reviews aren’t about the shop—they’re about the bread itself. Instead of rating a bakery 4.5 stars overall, you rate individual items: “This place’s salt bread is 5 stars, but the croissant is a 3.” That granular feedback actually helps you decide what to order when you visit.
Why I Built This
I’m passionate about supporting independent neighborhood bakeries, but I got frustrated with how existing review platforms work. A single star rating tells you almost nothing about whether a specific item is worth trying. You might avoid a bakery because it has a 3.8 rating, only to find out later that their salt bread is legendary—it’s just the rest of the menu that’s inconsistent.
I also wanted to build something that rewards genuine, verified reviews over spam. When you log a review, you can attach a receipt photo as proof you actually bought the item. That badge of authenticity helps other users trust the feedback and makes it harder for ads masquerading as reviews to gain traction.
What Bread Map Does
- Real-map bakery discovery: Browse bakeries plotted on an actual map with category filters. Looking for salt bread? Croissants? Donuts? Filter by bread type and find what’s nearby right now.
- Item-level reviews and ratings: Each bread type gets its own score, price, and user comments. You see exactly what people think of the sourdough before you visit.
- Verified purchase badges: Reviews tied to receipt photos rise above unverified ones. Upvote, downvote, and report spam to keep the feed honest.
- Contributor levels and following: Active mapmakers earn higher contributor status. Follow trusted bread experts and see their latest discoveries.
- Crowdsourced map building: Found an unlisted bakery? Add it in under a minute using the built-in registration wizard. Everyone’s contributions build the map together.
- Saved places and rankings: Bookmark bakeries you want to visit, browse trending spots, and check daily rankings of top-rated breads.
