KR Holiday Countdown Now on Android

If you live in Korea and find yourself constantly searching “when is the next holiday?”, you’re not alone. The problem isn’t a lack of calendars — it’s that checking one takes too long. I built KR Holiday Countdown to answer that question in the time it takes to unlock your phone.

The app was previously available on iOS, and I’m now bringing it to Android users on Google Play. This is the cross-platform expansion I’ve been working toward since launch.

I built this app for myself first. As someone who plans trips months in advance and negotiates leave with my employer, I realized I was spending way too much mental energy on the same calculation: “If I take X days off, how long is my actual break?” With Korea’s complex holiday system — including lunar-calendar holidays like Seollal and Chuseok, plus substitute holidays that shift annually — the math gets messy fast. I wanted a tool that did that work for me, instantly, and without needing to sign in or sync to the cloud.

What It Does

  • Shows the next Korean public holiday at a glance — big numbers on your home screen, updated instantly on launch
  • Plans long weekends automatically — tells you exactly how many leave days you need to stretch a break as long as possible, with ready-made suggestions like “Take 2 days off → 6-day break”
  • Tracks substitute holidays accurately — lunar-calendar holidays (Seollal, Chuseok, Buddha’s Birthday) are converted to the correct dates, and substitute days are clearly marked
  • Sets per-holiday alerts — pick which holidays matter to you and get notified 7 days, 3 days before, or on the day itself, so you can book trains and flights before they sell out
  • Works offline — holiday data for 2026-2030 is bundled in the app, no internet required. Dark mode, Korean and English language support, and sharing features round out the experience

The holiday data comes from Korea’s official government source (KASI). Newly designated temporary holidays, election days, and substitute holidays are reflected automatically — no app update needed to stay current.

This app is built for anyone in Korea who wants to stop manually counting days. Whether you’re a meticulous planner trying to squeeze the longest break from your limited leave days, someone who travels and books early, or just tired of scrolling through your calendar every time someone asks “when’s the next holiday?”, this solves that problem in seconds.
