Learn Ethernet Cable Termination Through Play

Most people study cable termination standards from a textbook. I wanted to build something where you learn by doing — where the muscle memory of crimping, the logic of direct vs. crossover cables, and the pinout sequence sink in through repetition and real consequences.

That’s why I created Cabling Tycoon, an indie management sim where you run a small shop that manufactures and sells Ethernet cables. Your job is to strip, untwist, arrange, and crimp RJ45 connectors in the correct sequence, over and over, until the standards stick.

I built this app because I noticed a gap between theory and practice in networking training. Study guides explain T568A and T568B, but they don’t explain why you need a crossover cable when connecting two PCs directly, or a direct cable when connecting a PC to a switch. Cabling Tycoon forces you to learn the difference by handling actual customer requests.

The game is aimed at network technician exam prep, junior engineers picking up a crimper for the first time, and anyone preparing for practical networking certifications. But it’s also just a satisfying tycoon game for simulation fans who enjoy the incremental upgrade loop.

How It Works

• Physical cable assembly: You rotate a stripper to peel the outer jacket, untwist the four twisted pairs, arrange all eight conductors in the correct color order, and press them into the RJ45 connector with a crimper. Every cable has two ends, so you do it twice.
• Customer logic puzzles: Customers describe what they’re connecting (PC to hub, switch to switch, etc.). You determine whether they need a direct or crossover cable—accounting for uplink ports and existing cables. Get it wrong and you lose reputation.
• Daily sales targets: Each shift has a revenue goal. Miss it and your shop closes for the day. A combo multiplier boosts your price per cable as you complete orders without mistakes.
• Upgrades: Earn money to buy tools that speed up parts of the process—powered strippers, pair separators, guided connectors, and faster crimpers. But no tool replaces the color arrangement; that’s pure skill.
• Practice mode: Assemble cables without time pressure or customers. Track your fastest color-arrangement time and pinpoint which positions you tend to get wrong.
• Online leaderboard: Submit your best cumulative revenue with just a two-character nickname. No signup, no login, no account friction.

The app also includes consumable items—energy drinks to extend your shift, coffee to freeze customer patience, extra materials to double your current cable, and a megaphone to restore a waiting customer’s mood. It’s a light layer of resource management that gives you tactical options when you’re close to missing your target.
