If you’ve ever stared at eight colored wires and forgotten which order they go in, you know the problem: RJ45 cabling isn’t something you memorize from a chart. It’s something your hands need to learn. Cabling Tycoon teaches that through play, not lectures.
I built this game because I watched people preparing for network technician exams — and newer engineers about to pick up a crimping tool for the first time — struggle with the sequence. The hands-on part is what sticks, so I made a game where you actually perform the steps: strip the jacket, untwist the pairs, place eight wires in order, seat the connector, and crimp it. Over and over, until T568A and T568B become muscle memory.
The app has been available on iOS for a while now, and today I’m bringing it to Android on Google Play.
What you’ll do
- Build real cables from start to finish. Strip, untwist, place all eight wires one slot at a time in the correct sequence, insert the connector, and crimp both ends. Every cable you make follows the actual steps.
- Learn when to use straight-through vs. crossover. Customers come in asking to connect two devices. You read what they are, figure out which cable type they need (hint: same device layers means crossover, different layers means straight-through), and hand over the right one. Uplink ports and coupler orders add real complexity.
- Hit daily revenue targets under pressure. Each day has a target revenue displayed on screen. Customers get impatient if they wait too long. String together flawless deliveries and a combo multiplier boosts what every cable pays. Miss the target and your shop closes.
- Upgrade your bench as you grow. Earn enough and invest in tools: a power stripper, pair separator, insert guide, power crimper, and inspection glasses all speed up different stages. A bigger signboard buys you more time each day. One-shot items like energy drinks, focus coffee, and a parts doubler help you survive crunch moments.
- Practice without the pressure. A practice mode lets you build cables with no clock, no customers, and no targets. It tracks your fastest wire placement and flags which pin numbers you get wrong most often, so you can see exactly where your hands stall.
