Bill Splitter: The App That Ends Group Payment Arguments

You know that moment after a group dinner when someone pulls out their phone to calculate who owes what? The math gets messy fast, especially when the group split into two restaurants, half the table didn’t drink, or people joined the trip partway through. I built Bill Splitter to make that moment painless.

I created this app because I kept running into the same problem with friends: the standard “divide by headcount” approach works fine for simple cases, but real group spending is messier. One person covers dinner, another pays for the hotel, a third gets the car rental. Some people skip rounds. Non-drinkers shouldn’t subsidize the bar tab. I needed something that could handle all of this fairly and quickly, without requiring everyone to sign up for an account.

What It Does

  • Five split methods — Choose the right tool for the situation. Simple N-way splits work for straightforward checks. Rounds let you handle multi-stop nights where the group changes. Drinks-only separation ensures non-drinkers don’t pay for alcohol. Per-item splitting assigns each dish to whoever ordered it. Detailed mode handles edge cases like mid-trip arrivals or weighted shares.
  • Instant settlement — Enter amounts and attendees, and the app calculates who owes whom. Transfer minimization automatically reduces the number of payments you actually need to make.
  • Easy sharing — Export your settlement as clean text for your group chat, or as an image that shows the full breakdown at a glance. Three formats available: simple, detailed, and per-person views.
  • Automatic history — Every split is saved locally with the date, location, and amounts. Export individual settlements as images, PDFs, or CSV files whenever you need them.
  • No account required — Open the app and start splitting immediately. Everything stays on your device; nothing is sent to a server. Works fully offline, with configurable rounding for your local currency.

This app is made for trip treasurers juggling hotel, car rental, and meal costs across different participants. It’s for the designated organizer who’s bouncing between round 1 at dinner, round 2 at the pub, and round 3 at karaoke with different people at each stop. It’s for study groups and clubs where everyone should pay exactly for what they ordered, not subsidize others’ choices. And it’s for anyone who’s tired of the awkward moment when a non-drinker gets charged for half the bar tab.

The core insight driving the design is that groups don’t spend money in simple, uniform ways. Real expense splitting requires flexibility. You need to handle rounds, dropouts, per-item tracking, and weighted shares. Most apps force you into one narrow approach; this one gives you options for how your group actually spends.
